AURORA, IL — An Aurora man who worked as a kindergarten teacher has been charged with sexually abusing two young children. Juan Avendando, 62, faces multiple felony charges, including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and indecent solicitation of a child.
The alleged incidents, which prosecutors say happened between April 2014 and March 2018, involved two children who were under the age of 13, according to Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Avendando, who worked at Bardwell Elementary School, was was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at his home Monday after a warrant had been issued for his arrest, police said. He is being held in Kane County Jail on $250,000 bond.
According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, if Avendando posts bond, he will be prohibited from having contact with children under the age of 17. He would also have to surrender his passport.
Avendando faces a minimum sentence of six years in prison. If convicted, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
