New dietary guidelines for 2019 have been released in Canada, and they are rather revolutionary. The food guide emphasizes three sections for healthy eating—foundations for healthy eating, foods and beverages that undermine healthy eating, and the importance of food skills.
Some of the most notable changes in the guideline include an emphasis on consuming produce, whole grains, and protein foods that are friendly for vegetarians; to avoid saturated fat; and it never mentions dairy consumption for healthy eating. It advises the avoidance of processed and prepared foods to limit high sodium, sugar, and saturated fat intake. It also encourages “food skills” such as cooking, for healthier eating, limiting food waste, and knowing what ingredients go into your food. The guide even encourages creating and enjoying meals with others, which helps you avoid bad dietary habits that happen when eating alone.
