A Radcliff couple was arrested Monday afternoon after police discovered a child in their care with bruising and healing wounds on her back and buttocks.

Zachari E. Dukes, 29, and Brittany J. Moore, 23, each are charged with second-degree criminal abuse of a child younger than 12, a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.

According to arrest citations, Dukes is accused of striking a 6-year-old girl with a switch on a daily basis. Police say the child’s back had “visible bruising in different stages of healing” and she was subjected to cruel punishment and abuse.

Moore, who according to the citation is married to Dukes, is charged for being present and allowing the alleged abuse to occur.

The 6-year-old and another child were removed from the home by Child Protective Services, according to the citation.

Dukes and Moore are lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center. They are scheduled to appear today in Hardin District Court.
