Fleece admits to owning child porn

The child pornography found in Virgil E. Fleece’s home spans 20 years and includes dozens of victims, ranging in age from 4 to 14, prosecutors said.

His collection was so expansive that the 51 charges on which he was indicted only refer to a fraction of what he had.

“There was certainly ample amounts of evidence that would have supported additional charges,” said Assistant Prosecutor Ron Welch.

But the 51 fourth-degree felonies Fleece admitted to on Monday, and the 20 years in prison that the state is recommending he serve, is sufficient for the 56-year-old, Welch said.

“We’re happy with the plea. The time he has agreed to serve is significant both in terms of punishment and protection of the public,” Welch said. “This will bring a close to that case.”

In addition, the plea spares the victims from testifying during a trial, Welch noted.

Once he is sentenced, Fleece also will be required to register as a sexual offender every 180 days for 25 years.

Each of the 51 counts of pandering in obscene material involving a minor that Fleece pleaded guilty to on Wednesday refers to a separate photo or video found in his possession.

City sanitation workers discovered some of the material the morning of Aug. 24 in trash bags outside Fleece’s home at 2129 Tannehill St., Welch said in court. In addition to the video, DVDs and binders of explicit photographs, the workers also found an envelope with Fleece’s name and address.
