MOBILE, AL (WALA) –
Mobile Police charged a man with capital murder for killing his girlfriend’s 19-week-old child.
Investigators were called to Providence Hospital at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 6 for a report of possible child abuse. Police said the infant later died from his injuries.
Markeise Caldwell, 25, was arrested and charged with capital murder.
As he was led to Mobile County Metro Jail Sunday night, Caldwell talked to reporters gathered at Mobile Police Headquarters.
Caldwell said, “I did something very, very… it’s horrible, y’all. And to the world, y’all, I’m not this person. I’m really not. I’ve allowed myself to be spiritually weak in my faith, and I hurt somebody I love, too. Because I treated him like my own.”
He added, “I overdrank. I have drinking issues and I messed up real bad.” Caldwell continued, “Sorry ain’t even the word. I want to say to my girl, her family, my family, and everyone else, I’m not this person y’all. I just want to let y’all know, but I gotta go get my mind right because I’m mentally gone.”
The 4-month-old victim has not been identified.
