A local reverend is behind bars today after a grand jury indicted him on child sex abuse charges.
The Rev. Edwin White, 39, is facing three counts of child sex abuse after he was arrested by a U.S. Marshal Wednesday. The counts are for acts against three different children younger than 12, according to Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich.
“A victim came forward to the Child Advocacy Center,” Rich said, “and the case has been processing through the Child Advocacy Center.”
The district attorney said the alleged crimes are not related to the church where White preaches. According to the First Baptist Church of Prichard website, White is an associate minister there.
“These are believed to be people known to him and we had no way to believe any of this is affiliated with the church he preaches at,” Rich said.
FOX10 News tried to talk to White’s family, but got no response.
A neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, says she is shocked about the allegations.
“I always see kids riding bikes and him having a good time with the kids,” the neighbor told FOX10. “I would never expect anything like that.”
This isn’t the first time White has been in trouble with the law. Records show he’s been arrested 12 times on many different charges. He was also accused of child sex abuse in 2009, but he was never prosecuted.
FOX10 News was unable to get a comment from church officials, but church members told us off camera they don’t believe white is guilty.
If convicted, Rich said, White could face up to 20 years in prison.
