Sarpanch’s son attempts to ‘rape’ 12th standard student

Police has failed to register an attempt to rape case against a ruling PDP Sarpanch’s son despite complaint of victim, a teenage girl, in police station Khrew, Pulwama on October 11.
The victim, (name withheld) a 12th standard student and resident of Khrew area told Rising Kashmir that a sumo driver namely Umar Shafi son of Mohammad Shafi, Sarpanch of Bathand village took her to some isolated place after she boarded his enroute Sumo to reach home and tried to sexually assault her.
She alleged that the driver tried to rape her but she resisted his attempts and saved herself from his clutches.
“On October 10 I finished my school and was waiting for a bus towards my home. I boarded a sumo heading towards my village and the driver dropped all passengers at their destinations. Then he drove his vehicle on a different route near JK Cements, Khrew saying that he is taking the short cut to reach the village a bit earlier,” the victim said.
She alleged that the driver took her to an isolated place, stopped his vehicle all of a sudden and tried to rape her. “He caught hold of me and tried to rape me. Despite pleas he didn’t let me go. Then I resisted and kicked him off and ran away from the sumo but he chased me,” alleged the girl with tears rolling down her eyes.
She said the accused continued to follow her. “I threw few stones at him while he was running to catch me again. He only stopped when he saw a person ploughing nearby.”
The victim narrated the incident to her mother in the evening and next day on October 11 the family went to police station Khrew to file a complaint.
The father of the girl alleged that police at first instance was very reluctant to register the complaint even as the victim narrated the entire incident to the duty officer.
“They made us wait for the whole day and asked us to sign blank papers in the evening,” the father of the victim alleged.
The family members alleged that police was trying to hush-up the case as the accused was a son of an influential person.
“Police did not mention the details in the complaint I narrated and faced. I was informed by the lawyer at court that police has filed only misbehavior charges against the accused,” she said.
The family members alleged that the accused was roaming freely and was continuously harassing them. “Every day he honks near my house,” said the girl’s father.
Meanwhile, Duty Officer police post Khrew, Javed Ahmad said the accused was released on interim bail. “The accused has been booked Under Section 294, and investigations are on,” he said.
He said the attempt to rape charges would be registered against the culprit after victim gives her statement before the judicial magistrate.
“Victim needs to give her statement before the judge so that we can register attempt to rape charges against the accused,” the police official added.
