Understanding Teens’ Views on Gender and Sexuality

According to a survey of hundreds of teens, today’s 13- to 20-year-olds think about gender and sexuality differently than older generations. About half of teens identified as exclusively heterosexual in the survey, compared to two-thirds of people ages 21 to 34. More than a third of teens identified as being somewhere between “completely straight” and “completely homosexual.” Half of teens know someone who goes by gender-neutral pronouns, and 70 percent want gender-neutral bathrooms in public places. Many teens say they gravitate toward gender-neutral clothing, with only 44 percent saying they always buy clothes designed for their own gender.
