A 12-year-old student from Columbus Middle School is in stable condition at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle after authorities say he was stabbed during a fight with another student.
In a Columbus Police Department press release issued Friday, investigators said two 12-year-old male students, both seventh graders, got into a fight just after noon at the middle school, located just off Highway 373. During the fight, one of them “stabbed and cut” the other, the press release said.
The suspect is in custody, and his case will be turned over to Lowndes County Juvenile Court, the press release said. Authorities have not released his name because he is a minor.
Columbus Municipal School District Superintendent Cherie Labat did not immediately answer a call from The Dispatch. City Public Information Officer Joe Dillon said the student used a knife in the incident.
The Dispatch will update this report as more information becomes available.
