JACKSON, MI – An 18-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday evening outside a Jackson apartment building.
Police responded to the call of shots fired at 11:51 p.m. July 19 in the area of 301 Steward Avenue when they discovered the man lying on the ground outside one of the Reed Manor apartment buildings, according to a Jackson Police Department statement.
The man suffered a single gunshot wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, police said.
A candlelit memorial was placed at the site of his death in the grass behind the F building.
“I think that new security guard we have might need counseling after last night,” said Reed Manor resident Viola Astala. “He’s a pretty young guy and he was trying his hardest to keep that kid alive.”
Astala, who said she has lived at Reed Manor for little more than a year, said she is fearful Wednesday night’s shooting is just a sign that more drug activity is returning to the neighborhood.
“It was bad last year, then it calmed down for a awhile until last night,” she said.
The man’s name is being withheld at this time pending family notification of his death.
No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.
