39-year-old arrested after DC shootout left 1-year-old shot, police search for 2nd suspect

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Police announced Tuesday that they have made an arrest in the shooting that put a 13-month-old boy in the hospital following an incident in an alley in Northeast on July 10.
39 year-old Derrick Damon Watson of Northeast has been arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, DC police announced in a press conference Tuesday.
Police also announced that they are searching for a second suspect in the shootout, 27 year-old Saheed Aluwatoyin Washington Sulu of Southeast.

Police also say they are searching to identify another person of interest who was captured on surveillance video during the incident:

“No one shoots a 1-year-old and gets away with it on our watch,” DC police chief Peter Newsham tweeted days after the shooting.

Police responded to the shooting in the 1300 block of I Street just before 9 p.m. and they say the boy was shot in his lower extremities.
“There was some kind of gathering out here, then there was an exchange of gunfire,” said Newsham after the incident.

Newsham says the child was not targeted.
“It looks like he was struck by maybe by a stray bullet,” said Newsham.
On Tuesday, Newsham confirmed the boy was back at home from the hospital.
