Crime dramas aren’t just cop procedurals. And they’re not just courtroom dramas with lawyers yelling over each other. In fact, there’s a whole genre of shows (cop dramas included) about crime, corruption, race, class, and just about all the other moral questions we ask ourselves about what’s right and what’s wrong.
And what separates a good crime show from a great one isn’t just the ingenious manner in which the writers reveal the crime, or how much it stretches the bounds of what makes a cop show a cop show. It’s the different ways the television medium can take something as broad as the catch-all terms mystery and intrigue and create suspenseful heist shows, and gripping procedurals, and biting comedies that do more than rehash the constant crime-of-the-week format network, cable, and even streaming shows can often fall into. And even if the show does end up doing a more weekly, standalone, repetitive format, it never gets old to a loving audience.
So despite all the crime shows out there, it’s not too hard to make a best crime drama list. Too many shows fall into the trap of predictable storytelling, a cast rotating so many times their characters lose their emotional connection to the audience, or shows go on for far too long (or are much too short). Still, we undoubtedly missed a few hidden gems, or seemingly obvious choices, so we should note: this list isn’t the be all end all, and it certainly isn’t a permanent, unfixed canon. But if you’re looking for some of the best modern storytelling on television, on cable, and on streaming, here are the 50 best crime dramas we’ve found.

The supporting cast, featuring Sarah Goldberg, Stephen Root, and Henry Winkler are all exceptional, but the real star of the supporting cast might be Anthony Carrigan, who’s jovial gangster NoHo Hank should be kind of terrifying, but turns out to be one of the most entertaining characters on all of television.
