All suspects in custody after officer-involved shooting on northwest side

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 11, 2015) — Four suspects are in custody after an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday on the city’s northwest side.

At about 3:25 p.m., IMPD officers were dispatched to a residential burglary in progress in the 3100 block of Gerrard Avenue. The caller reported that a neighbor’s home was being burglarized and four men were carrying electronics out of the home. The caller also said that the suspects were seen entering a white vehicle.

“Someone did exactly what we ask every time. If you see something call us, and that’s exactly what this witness did,”said Rafael Diaz, a spokesperson for IMPD.

“I just heard gunshots and it sounded like it was coming from right here so I had my kids jump down and get on the ground,” said witness Lamonica Radford.

Police spotted a white vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on West 34th Street approaching North High School Road.

The vehicle then traveled northbound and pulled into Carmel Creek Apartments near the 3600 block of North High School Road.

“We actually had our patio door open because it’s a beautiful day, unfortunately, we did start hearing gun shots,” said witness Letrece Oliver.

Before initiating the traffic stop, four men exited the vehicle and ran off. The officer observed one of the males with a gun in his hand and continued to chase him. The suspect turned and raised his weapon at the officer, and the officer fired several shots. It is unconfirmed at this time whether the suspect fired at the officer.

“I saw guys jumping out of the car and running with guns and then I hear the police say, ‘Get dow, get down,’” said Radford.

All four suspects were apprehended a short time later.

IPS school 107 was temporarily placed on lockdown. The lockdown has since been lifted. Oliver thought the worst as she was waiting for her 6-year-old son to get off the bus.

“What if he was getting off the school bus at this time and a stray bullet came flying? I was terrified,” said Oliver.

No officers or suspects were struck in this incident. One firearm, believed to be in possession of the potential shooter, was located at the scene.
