Allison Langdon reveals the parenting style she’s adopted with her children Scout, two, and Mack, four – and it’s nothing like the ‘free-range’ way she was raised

Allison Langdon has spoken out about her own parenting style in light of her new show, Parental Guidance.

In an interview with Stellar, the 42-year-old – who shares Mack, four, and two-year-old Scout with her husband Michael Willesee Jr – explained she had enjoyed a ‘free-range’ childhood while growing up on a farm.

But after moving to the city with her family, she says her own parenting style is completely different.

‘Because we now live in the city I’ve become far more helicopter-like,’ she said.

Helicopter parenting is when parents are over-involved in their child’s life, many times as a way to protect their child.

Free-range parenting, meanwhile, is the concept of encouraging children to function independently and with limited parental supervision.

‘I find myself in the park with the kids and I’ll be saying to them, “Be careful. Don’t go too far”, she added.

‘But what you’re actually telling them is they’re doing something dangerous as opposed to just letting kids kind of work it out themselves. That’s actually something from this whole experiment I’m trying to change.’

She added that prior to the series, she ‘didn’t even know all the different parenting styles’, and was just ‘winging it’.

Allison recently spoke to AWW about her relationship with Michael, 53, saying they were ‘mostly separated from each other’ before they had children because of their busy careers.

She praised her husband for supporting her over the years when she was a reporter on 60 Minutes, despite him having his own high-pressure career in the media.

Michael used to be a TV presenter, but now has a corporate job at Westpac.

‘Not many couples can survive such highs and lows. But Mike’s an extraordinary, understanding man. He’s been by my side, supporting me, for 15 years now,’ she said.

Michael also said of his wife: ‘As a mum and a journo, Ally’s the hardest working person I’ve ever known.’
