HRC OBSERVED NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY: April 18 was National Transgender HIV Testing Day, a day to acknowledge an important issue affecting our community. According to the CDC, transgender people are three times as likely to receive a new HIV diagnosis compared to the national average. One in twenty transgender women are living with HIV, with Black (44%) and Latina (26%) transgender women disproportionately affected. Transgender men, particularly those who have sex with cisgender men, are also at high risk, and more research is needed to understand their medical needs. More from HRC.

HRC MOURNS REMY FENNELL, BLACK TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILLED IN NORTH CAROLINA: Her death is at least the 15th violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person in 2021. Said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1), “Our hearts go out to Remy’s family, friends and community, as well as the entire LGBTQ community in Charlotte. It’s never been more important for everyone — from community members to those at all levels of government — to speak out, affirm that Black Trans Lives Matter and take action to bring this violence to an end.” More from HRC.

  • After two transgender women were killed in North Carolina in the last two weeks, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced that they are investigating the possibility that the two killings are connected. More from Out and Metro Weekly.
