Armyman held for shooting 24-yr-old teacher

GURGAON: An armyman has been arrested in Rewari for allegedly shooting on Thursday morning at a 24-year-old private school teacher waiting for her school bus at Bilaspur Chowk.

The man, arrested on Friday, told police that he had shot at her as she had refused to continue her affair with him after he got married a year ago.

Family members of the victim, meanwhile, said she had informed police about the telephonic harassment by the accused a day before the shooting, but was asked to file a written complaint.

“If police had acted upon her complaint within time, she would not be struggling for life in hospital now,” Mohan Singh, uncle of the victim, said.

The woman, for whom a green corridor was created on Thursday, is in critical condition in Max Hospital.

Accused Manjit Singh (26) is a sepoy hailing from Mirjapur village under Pataudi police station and currently posted in the 633 EME Battalion at Hisar Cantonment. Although the teacher’s family members have not named any suspect, police zeroed in on the accused on the basis of the teacher’s call record on Thursday evening.

Inspector Dilbagh Singh, the investigating officer, said the accused had hidden his mobike and pistol after shooting at the victim. “We arrested him near a flyover in Rewari and will produce him in a city court on Saturday. We will seek his police remand to recover the vehicle and the weapon used in the crime,” Singh said.

According to police, the accused had hatched the plan to kill the teacher a month ago when he had visited a place near Aligarh in UP and bought an illegal 7.65mm pistol.

Singh said the accused had taken four days’ leave starting August 17 and was to report for work on Friday. “He was known to the victim and wanted to meet her but she didn’t want to, and that was reason behind the entire episode,” he added.

Police are yet to record the statement of the victim.
