A mother and father who reported their teenage daughter missing seven weeks ago have been charged with her murder.

Bernadette Walker, 17, was reported missing by her parents Sarah and Scott Walker in Cambridgeshire, after she had not been seen for three days.

Mrs Walker, 37, and Mr Walker, 50, appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court virtually on Monday. They will appear before Peterborough Crown Court on Wednesday and have been remanded in custody.

Bernadette’s parents, both of Millfield, Peterborough, said they last saw their daughter on July 18 when she ran out of their car and vanished.

Her mum said that her daughter texted them at 1am on July 20 saying she would be home ‘soon’.

But she added that none of her friends had ‘heard from her’ and she had not been on social media. The parents reported her missing the following day.

The mum-of-nine said at the time: ‘I can’t eat or sleep properly. I miss and love my eldest princess so much, she’s missing out on her baby sister, who has learned to smile and coo already.

‘I have to think that she is hiding at one of her friend’s homes, worried about coming home now that the police will want to speak to her, I can’t think of any alternative scenarios, I just can’t.’

She put up missing person photos around Peterborough to appeal for information about the whereabouts of her daughter.

Her dad appealed to his daughter on Facebook last week, writing: ‘You can imagine how much we are both worried.

‘We miss you. We need to know that you’re safe. We love you.’

Police have been carrying out searches to try to find the teenager and launched a ‘no-body’ murder investigation on Friday.

Mr Walker was arrested on Saturday, while the mother was detained on Sunday.

Detective Superintendent Jon Hutchinson said: ‘Whilst my team have made significant progress with this investigation in the last few days, we are yet to find Bernadette.

‘Therefore my plea is for anyone who has information on what has happened to her, or where she might be, to get in touch as a matter of urgency.’

Anyone with information should contact police by calling 101.
