BERKELEY — The search for the person who shot and killed a 19-year-old UC Berkeley student brought with it a reward offer from the city and police Thursday.

A $50,000 reward will be given to anyone who supplies information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Seth Smith’s killer, Berkeley police spokesman Byron White said.

A passerby found Smith down and bleeding on the sidewalk on Dwight Way near Valley Street around 11:35 p.m. on Monday and called 911, police said.

Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. His killing is the third homicide Berkeley police have investigated this year.

“At this time we appreciate that this crime is being taken so seriously,” Smith’s mother, Michelle Rode-Smith said in an online message to this news organization. “We hope information comes forward to help in finding the perpetrator. We continue to be reeling from this senseless tragedy.”

Smith was holding a double major in economics at UC Berkeley and was on course to graduate next spring, his mother said. She speculated that he may have been taking a late-evening walk to clear his head, as was common for him.

With no publicly identified suspect or potential motive, authorities  are appealing to the public.
