WEST ISLIP, NY — Bayview Elementary School will be closed on Thursday after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus, according to the West Islip School District. The employee was in school Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a letter from Superintendent Bernadette Burns.

“Due to the challenges associated with obtaining substitute teachers and notifying the parents of students who need to be contacted, we are going to move to fully remote instruction for students tomorrow, Thursday, October 22 at Bayview,” Burns wrote.

As of Thursday morning, the school is still set to reopen on Friday. The local health department will be conducting contact tracing throughout the day and will inform those who are identified as being a close contact and issue quarantine orders as necessary.

“We share this information with you as part of our ongoing efforts to keep the community informed of COVID-related issues that affect the school environment,” Burns wrote. “However, we must respect the laws relating to the privacy of our students and staff members, and therefore will not provide any additional details.”

According to the New York State COVID-19 school report card, as of Thursday there are two staff members who tested positive at the elementary school. In addition, one Udall Middle School staff member tested positive and three West Islip High School students.
