Binghamton University Faculty Lead an Anti-Racist Town Hall | #students | #parents

One example Friday gives how these issues reach the greater Binghamton community is the Blue Lights Initiative. Friday describes the events that occurred in the efforts to establish this initiative downtown, stating, “They tried to put them in the West Side, which is where typically black and brown folk are. What we saw that as is basically the way the university allowing predominantly white students to now call the cops on black and brown folk just because they feel uncomfortable. All you have to do is push that button, and a cop will come, just for people chilling on the side of the road. And it’s mainly on the west side where these black and brown folk are so who is that going to disproportionately affect? So in that way, Binghamton University was actively attempting to be complicit in this police industrial complex or prison industrial complex.”
