BIG RAPIDS – Local high school bowling teams are approaching the final weeks of the season and will have another big weekend of action.
Coach David Nawrot’s team is in competition at The Gate in Big Rapids on Saturday against Chip Hills the first match, and Central Montcalm the second match
“On the girls’ side, it will be a close battle between both teams, as both teams will be equally matched,” Nawrot said. “It’s going to come down to spare shooting and who can fill the most frames. The boys will have to bring their A game for their match against Chip Hills, although Chip Hills graduated quite a few seniors. They do have a couple of boys that have potential of bringing their best out of us.
“We will be considered the underdog against Central Montcalm, who currently leads the conference. I think we will be able to give them a match, as long as we have confidence in our shot making, and stay in our own game.”
Morley Stanwood bowling will participate in individuals competition this week in the Silver Division. The meet will take place at Northway Lakes in Muskegon on Saturday. Schools participating will be Kent City, Holton, Lakeview and Morley Stanwood.
“These individual meets are designed to get the kids ready for regional action, as they will be bowling six games on Saturday,” MS coach Denise Bowen said. “There will be some tough competition, with each school having a couple of individuals who score really well. I’m confident we will have 3-to-4 bowlers in the top 10 finishers.
“All of our athletes performed really well in last Saturday’s dual meet, and we are looking forward to seeing what they do on an individual basis.”
Pine River is another area sports team with a busy week.
Pine River will be at Cadillac on Wednesday with Onaway and Boyne City and home on Saturday with Traverse City West, Hart and Mancelona
“We will see a lot of opponents from the far north area this week,” Pine River wrestling coach said. “We don’t have a lot of common matches with some of these teams so it will be nice to see their lineups. We will travel to Cadillac for the first time in a number of years. It’s great to see their program going again.
“Our Saturday event will be tough competition. Hart has a great squad that bumped us from the post season last year.
Some of our young guys are showing great progress in the first couple weeks of the season. Damien Jackson has done a great job when he gets opportunities and Gavyn Nelson is putting together some great performances in his first high school season.”
