Broward event to mourn mass shooting victims, demand action | #schoolshooting

Several gun-control and Democratic groups are holding a vigil in Sunrise on Saturday to mourn the victims of the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas.

The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Sunrise Amphitheater, 10610 West Oakland Park Blvd., in Sunrise.

The event was announced by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which began in the aftermath of the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where 28 people were killed. It’s working with its related organization Students Demand Action along with Change The Ref, Broward Young Democrats, Ruth’s List Broward, the Broward Democratic Hispanic Caucus and Broward for Progress.

The announcement said people are gathering “to grieve with the latest victims of our gun violence epidemic.”

The second purpose is to “demand action” from state and federal lawmakers to immediately pass “gun sense” legislation. Moms Demand Action’s priorities include universal background checks for gun buyers, additional red flag laws that allow courts to order confiscation of weapons from people who might be dangerous, disarming domestic abusers and increasing research into gun violence.

March for Our Lives, an organization that seeks to curb gun violence that was founded after the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, has announced rallies for June. 11.

Two recent mass shootings — on May 14 at a Buffalo, N.Y., supermarket and Tuesday at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school — spurred the Saturday rally.
