Child abuse shock: Geelong, Wyndham top state | #childabuse | #children | #kids

Shock new figures have revealed Geelong and Wyndham are now in the top three Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Victoria for alleged child sexual assault.

Data from the Crime Statistics Agency show Wyndham recorded 183 assaults in the last financial year, up from 147 from 2020-21.

Geelong and Casey ranked equal second with 155 attacks each, followed by Greater Bendigo (154), Latrobe (153) and Melbourne (112).

All of the top six LGAs recorded increases on the previous year.

Geelong cases climbed by 13.5 per cent over the last twelve months, while reports to Wyndham police jumped by 25 percent.

The City of Melbourne recorded a staggering 85 percent increase.

Hume, which topped the list last year with 179 cases, recorded the biggest fall – down almost 50 per cent to 93.

Reports increased from six to 11 in Surf Coast Shire, from eight to nine in Colac Otway while the number of alleged cases in Golden Plains fell from 12 to eight.

The data only covers reports to police and does not take into account whether charges were eventually laid.

Police said the figures refer to a swag of offences ranging from rape to online grooming, meaning the data does not always reflect where the offences took place.

Overall child sex offences dropped from 3234 in 2020-21, to 2081 in 2021-2.
