Child predator phishing scam that poses as an email alert preys on parents’ fears

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) – The 7 Action News Investigators have learned about a new scam the Better Business Bureau wants to warn Metro Detroiters about.

The scam – which comes in the form of an email – preys on a parent’s fear. It’s a false promise of urgent information on child predators in their community – that turns out to be bogus.

Officials say parents randomly get an e-mail alert, such as “Alert: There is a child predator living near you!”

When opened, it warns a predator has moved into the area and provides a link with more information. But clicking on the link infects your computer in an attempt to steal your identity, passwords and/or credit information.
