The National Police have arrested four people for allegedly spreading a fake child kidnapping video on social media platform Facebook.
Deputy head of the cybercrime directorate at the police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), Sr. Comr. Rickynaldo Chairul, said the suspects were arrested on Thursday at different places, namely in South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, South Tangerang in Banten and Bekasi in West Java.
The suspects have been identified as security officer EW, 31, a driver RA, 33, an angkot (public minivan) driver JHHS, 31, and an unemployed woman DNL, 21.
“According to our investigation, these four we’re the first people who uploaded the (fake child kidnapping) video through their respective Facebook accounts,” Ricky said on Friday, as quoted by tempo.co.
He explained that the suspects uploaded the video and caption about child kidnapping in Ciseeng in Bogor and Sawangan in Depok, both in West Java; and in Ciputat in South Tangerang, Banten.
As a result, the uploaded content has sparked hysteria in the community.
“This post is fake,” Ricky said.
He added that the suspects said they posted the content only to make people more aware of the issue.
“But they did not think about it could cause panic among netizens,” he said.
Despite having no political motives in spreading the false content, Ricky emphasized that the suspects would be charged under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and/or the Criminal Law.
The police are investigating further to find out whether others spread the fake video. (sau)
