Gregory Allen Rumph was booked late Wednesday night into the Shawnee County Corrections lockup on charges including stalking and kidnapping, child endangerment, and felony fleeing and eluding. That charge was included after authorities say Rumph led them on a brief chase in Topeka.
Officers arrived on the scene in the 2600 block of SW 33rd Street at around 5:40 Wednesday night with reports of the possible abduction. They found Rumph in a pickup truck near SW 29th and Indian Trail Road. He refused to stop and began the chase, which lasted about 10 minutes. Rumph called dispatchers, who convinced him to stop the truck and free the child.
But the slow speed chase started again, and this time, Rumph admitted he also had a 3-month old baby in the truck with him. The pursuit ended at SE 29th and Kansas Avenue, where Rumph was taken into custody.
Police report Rumph does know the 7-year old, and that no one was hurt in the incident.
Rumph was already wanted on warrants in two counties.
The Shawnee County Jail says he’s also held on warrants from Leavenworth and Brown Counties. The one in Brown County was a parole violation in a felony theft case.
