Assessment center comes to agreement with area counties
ROSCOMMON – Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center (NMCAC) signed an interagency agreement with Crawford, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Roscommon counties in a Jan. 24 ceremony.
The four-county interagency agreement will coordinate response to child abuse allegations. NMCAC is located at 112 South 4th Street, Roscommon, Michigan.
The four-county interdisciplinary team county prosecutors, law enforcement, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, medical, mental health, advocacy personnel and other professionals who recognize the special needs of child abuse victims and are committed to working together. The Michigan Child Protection Law requires county prosecutors, in coordination with children’s advocacy centers such as the NMCAC, to establish a protocol for adopting and implementing standard child abuse and neglect investigation and interview protocols.
These protocols ensure that cases of suspected sexual and physical abuse of children are investigated in a consistent, effective and child-appropriate manner.
The overriding philosophy of this interagency agreement is to consider first and foremost what is best for the child. Established in 2014, NMCAC is a non-profit 501c3 children’s advocacy center that provides a safe, child friendly, neutral place for children to be forensically interviewed when they have been a victim of a crime or witness to a crime.
Its mission is to reduce the trauma of child abuse and neglect by providing prevention, intervention and advocacy. Advocacy, counseling and medical services are provided free of charge.
Donations to help a child in need are gratefully accepted at www.nmcac4kids.org.
