Victor Dorato, 46, was charged Friday with second-degree sexual abuse and forcible touching, both class A misdemeanors, Bartlett said.
Dorato is a New York state Level 2 registered sex offender, Bartlett said.
Deputy Ryen Boehme and investigators from the Columbia County Special Victims Unit began the investigation Oct. 21.
The alleged sexual acts occurred in the town of Greenport over the past year, when the victim was less than 14 years old, Bartlett said.
Dorato was arraigned in Greenport Town Court before Justice Barry Sack and was remanded to the Columbia County Jail, where he is being held on $2,000 bail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 26, at 3 p.m., Bartlett said.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is urged to contact Senior Investigator Mark Dunspaugh at 518-828-3344, Bartlett said.
Bartlett said he would like to acknowledge the strength and courage the young victim showed during the investigation that led to the arrest.
In 1996, Dorato was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse, with a victim under 11 years old, Bartlett said.
He was sentenced to two to six years in prison in that case.
Dorato was classified a Level 2 sex offender when he was released from prison, Bartlett said.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Child Advocacy Center of Columbia-Greene Counties and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
