A registered sex offender has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for abusing his girlfriend’s daughter to death.

Juan Javier Maravilla, 33, was sentenced on Friday in Green Bay, Wisconsin after he was convicted of first-degree reckless homicide and physical abuse of a child.

The case was so horrific Judge John Zakowski called it ‘torture’ at the hearing before sentencing Maravilla.

Maravilla was arrested after he and his girlfriend, Sarah Kairys, took Kairys’ 15-month-old child to a hospital in May 2017. The child was pronounced dead.

‘I could see that the child was covered in bruises all over its body varying size and color,’ police said in the criminal complaint obtained by WBAY.

An autopsy later determined that the child, who was not named, died of blunt force injuries to the head and torso. The injuries, which included bite marks and broken ribs, were in different stages of healing, suggesting that the abuse was ongoing and not confined to one occasion.

Officers questioned Maravilla and Kairys and they initially said the girl fell down the stairs and claimed her death was an accident.

Maravilla said that he was not able to live at Kairys’ home because he is a registered sex offender and it would violate his parole.

However, Kairys later told police that she noticed her daughter was ‘getting more bruises lately,’ and added that Maravilla told her the bruises were from falls.

Kairys also said the bruises were getting darker in the week before her daughter’s death and the girl was ‘crying a little more.’

On the night of her daughter’s death, Kairys said she was watching movies with Maravilla when he went upstairs to put the girl to bed. Kairys said she later saw her daughter crying on the floor at the bottom of the steps.

She later told police she believe Maravilla had something to do with her daughter’s death.

Maravilla eventually admitted to abusing the child and told police, ‘I smacked her up because I got mad, I just got mad and accidentally hit her,’ while demonstrating how he hit the child on her face.

He then reportedly became upset and said, ‘I didn’t mean for this shit, I didn’t want her to go (die).’

While Maravilla was in jail, another inmate told police that Maravilla said he kicked the baby in the head.

‘The trauma that led to this little girl’s death, it’s very disturbing,’ Lieutenant Rick Belanger said.

Kairys has been charged with neglecting a child, child abuse and resisting or obstructing an officer.

She pleaded no contest to the charges on Thursday and is set to be sentenced on October 9.
