WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Swimming season is already underway, but before you head out to a pool, you may want to consider what your children are wearing.
ALIVE Solutions, SMART Safety and Y Tribe: YMCA Aquatics put this year’s swimsuits to the test. It wasn’t to determine the style, age-appropriateness, and comfort, but to find out which colors are best visible underwater.
“Top choices when you’re choosing swimming suits, neon, bright contrasting colors,” said Tina Stein, Program Director for the Northwest Greater Wichita YMCA. “The bottom choices would be a blue swimming suit or a white swimming suit that you can’t notice at all when it’s at the bottom of the pool.”
While darker colors can show up in a light pool, ALIVE Solutions says “they can often be dismissed for a pile of leaves, dirt, or a shadow so I tend to stay away from those colors when possible.”
The City of Wichita aquatics team also reminds parents of other safety tips, including never allowing children to swim alone, making sure your children take breaks and enrolling them in swimming lessons. It’s the same advice from the Y.
”Our goal is to take the drowning rate down. And that’s always number one. I want people to have fun, but I want them to be safe and to always take precautions when they’re coming in and out of the pool area,” said Stein.
