#childsafety | Judge reduces bail for San Antonio mom charged with abandoning son; child still missing

A judge reduced the bail for a mother charged with abandoning her child, but she remained in Bexar County jail Wednesday and her son is still missing.

The bail for D’Lanny Chairez, 20, who was arrested in mid-March, was reduced from $250,000 to $150,000, court records show. If she can make that bail, which would require posting a bond of $15,000, she would be have to remain at home except to go to work and would be required to wear a GPS monitor.

Her child, 21-month-old James Avi Chairez hasn’t been seen for three months.

Family and friends continue to search for the boy and were in front of Main Plaza downtown Wednesday, wearing shirts with a photo of his face and holding up signs describing the missing child.

James was last seen Jan. 4 on security video, entering a drug store with his mother in the 7100 block of Marbach Road.

Mariesol Gomez, D’Lanny Chairez’s aunt, hasn’t seen her great-nephew since Thanksgiving.

“I don’t know where to look for him,” Gomez said sadly. “How can you keep your normal life going when you have this big rip in your heart?”

Right before going into work one day last week, Gomez received a call from an unknown number. Heart racing, she answered and heard a prompt from Bexar County Jail.

It was her niece. The two spoke twice for a total of 17 minutes, Gomez said.

“D’Lanny, I want to help you, but you’ve got to help yourself,” Gomez said she told her niece. “You’ve got to say something.”

“Just tell us where James is,” Gomez pleaded.
