The new school year is right around the corner and preparing the kids for their return to the classroom can be a financial burden for many parents. Each year, families spend more than $400 on school supplies for each child, according to the National Retail Federation.
Back-to-school expenses can be especially challenging for many families in the Rio Grande Valley, where nearly 30% of the population lives bellow the poverty line, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
South Texas Health System Children’s is hoping to lessen the financial burden and stress on local parents by hosting its first-ever Back-to-School Block Party. Taking place on Saturday, August 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the main parking lot of STHS Children’s, the community event will feature a large school supply giveaway by the hospital and local organizations.
“Getting the kids back-to-school ready can be stressful for many parents, and that’s before factoring in the cost of school supplies,” says Lance Ames, Chief Executive Officer, South Texas Health System Children’s & STHS Edinburg. “So, we wanted to help alleviate some of that stress by hosting this special giveaway for the community. Parents can stop by and collect free school supplies, all while enjoying live performances from local students and more.”
But there’s more to the event than free school supplies. South Texas Health System Children’s has partnered with community organizations and City of Edinburg departments, including the Edinburg Fire Department, to provide important children’s safety education for parents. Local experts will be on hand to provide important tips related to car seat, fire, playground safety and more.
“From updating your family’s home fire plan to making sure the booster seat is properly installed in your vehicle, the start of the new school year is a great time to brush up on important topics related to child safety,” says Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing and Public Relations, South Texas Health System. “During the event, parents will have the chance to speak with local experts and collect important safety advice to help keep their children protected well beyond the first day of school.”
The block party – open to the entire family – will also feature live entertainment by local students, including performances by Edinburg’s Robert Vela High School drumline, the award-winning PSJA North Raiderettes, and local School of Rock students. You’re encouraged to show your spirit by wearing your school colors.
