UNC Greensboro E-sports assistant director’s tips for keeping kids safe while gaming

MY GOODNESS. THAT BRINGS US TO OUR FIRST GUEST BECAUSE THE KIDS MAY SPEND THE SUMMER DAYS INSIDE, WHICH IS A GOOD IDEA. MAYBE WATCHING TV OR PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, BUT IF THEY’RE GOING TO PLAY ONLINE, THERE ARE SOME THINGS PARENTS SHOULD KNOW TO KEEP THEIR CHILDREN SAFE FROM SCAMS PREDATORS AND INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT. TO BREAK DOWN SOME ADVICE FOR PARENTS I’D LIKE TO WELCOME JACOB CRAWFORD NOW. HE IS THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF E-SPORTS AT UNC GREENSBORO. JACOB, GREAT TO HAVE YOU. >> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. AUDREY: YOU’RE WELCOME. HOW CAN A PARENT TELL IF A GAME IS AGE-APPROPRIATE FOR THEIR CHILD? >> SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL SEE ON EVERY GAME IS THE ACRONYM “ES RB.” THEY HAVE SEVERAL RATINGS FROM MATURE CONTENT TO EVERYONE TO 17+. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND WHEN THE CHILD SHOWING INTEREST IN A-GAME TO TRY TO FIND THE RATING AND IF IT FITS THEIR AGES. AUDREY: WHAT DO PARENTAL CONTROLS DO AND HOW CAN FOLKS USE THEM EFFECTIVELY? >> A LOT OF THE COMPANIES ALLOW YOU TO PUT A CODE THAT WILL ONLY ALLOW PARENTS TO ENTER AND GRANT ACCESS TO CONTENT THAT THEY WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO HAVE ACCESS TO. THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO RESTRICT ACCESS TO ITEMS WITHIN THE GAME. A BIG ONE RIGHT NOW IS IN GAME PURCHASES. PARENTS DO NOT WANT TO SEE THE $100 BILL COME THROUGH FROM A VIDEOGAME. IT ALLOWS THEM TO BLOCK TO FOR WEBSITES OR DIFFERENT TIME RESTRICTIONS AS WELL. THERE ARE MANY THINGS THEY CAN UTILIZE. AUDREY: ARE THERE SOME GAME ETIQUETTE TIPS THAT PARENTS SHOULD TALK TO THEIR KIDS ABOUT BEFORE THEY START PLAYING? >> A BIG ONE IS EVERYONE HAS TO START SOMEWHERE. BEING RESPECTFUL AND UNDERSTANDING THIS COULD BE THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE IS PLAYING THE GAME. BANTER IS ACCEPTABLE BUT BEING RUDE IS NOT. MAKING SURE IF THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE FUN AND BANTER BACK AND FORTH WITH FRIENDS OR PEERS, HAVE FUN BUT DON’T BE RUDE. LEARN HOW TO MUTE OTHER PLAYERS AND YOURSELF. MAKE SURE YOU’RE HAVING FUN AND BEING A GOOD SPORT. AUDREY: LASTLY, HOW SHOULD THEY NAVIGATE THESE CONVERSATIONS WHEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SAFETY? THERE ARE SERIOUS CONCERNS OUT THERE AS FAR AS CAREGIVERS. THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE EYES ON WHAT THEIR KIDS ARE SEEING AND WHAT THEY ARE ENGAGING IN. >> A BIG THING FOR ME IS PLAY THE GAME WITH THEM SO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE GOING THROUGH, WHAT ENVIRONMENT THEY ARE PUTTING THEMSELVES IN, AND LET THEM KNOW, HEY, IF SOMETHING HAPPENS ONLINE OR YOU HEAR SOMETHING DIFFERENT, PLEASE TELL THEM. IF THEY ARE NOT PLAYING THE GAME WITH THEM, THEY NEED TO HAVE COMMUNICATION OPEN WITH THEIR CHILDREN SO THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE TO TELL THEM, HEY, THIS IS GOING ON IN CHAT OR VERBALLY IN THE GAME. AUDREY: JACOB, THANK YOU FOR THESE TIPS. WE APPRECIATE YOUR TIME. YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT UNCG’S E-SPORTS PROGRAMS AND ALL THEIR OFFERINGS AT E-SPORTS.UNCG.EDU
