Google, Facebook and Twitter will face fines of up to €20m if they fail to remove abusive or harmful online content, under new legislation being prepared by the minister for arts and media.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Green Party deputy leader Catherine Martin said the issue of online abuse, such as that suffered by her colleague Hazel Chu, the lord mayor of Dublin, must be tackled. “We need to look at how quickly we can take that [abuse] down and what are the sanctions,” she said. “We’re looking at setting the maximum fine at €20m.”

Under the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill, which Martin intends publishing “in the coming months”, a newly established Media Commission would be able to levy fines
