DeVos: Biden buying off voters with student loan pardon | #Education

Attacks on President Joe Biden’s plan to forgive some $10,000 in student loans for wealthy families earning up to $300,000 are escalating with top Republicans claiming it’s just a scheme to “buy” up voters with tax dollars.
“You haven’t solved anything,” said former Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in an interview.
She said that the move will do nothing for the next generation of borrowers and will only show those who never took out a loan or paid theirs off that there is a two-stage political system in Washington for friends of the president and the rest.
“All you’ve done,” she said with loan forgiveness, “is buy a bunch of political points.” DeVos added, “It’s just a crazy idea.”
On Tuesday, she began a book tour promoting Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child.
In his 2020 campaign, Biden made several promises to pay off college loans as he maneuvered to the left.
He has already granted some loan amnesty and is looking at a larger move to forgive $10,000 in debt for wealthy families.
That has prompted a blue-collar backlash, especially from the two-thirds of families who haven’t put a child in college or sought a student loan.
For those who did save, participate in a 529 plan, or work off their student debt, DeVos added, the Biden plan will make them feel like suckers.
“What does it say for all those folks? Boy, you were really stupid here,” she said.
One solution, said DeVos, was for the federal government to get out of the student loan business.
For those getting loans, she said that students should be required to sign a promissory note to pay off debt.
And high schoolers should be encouraged to consider trades or delaying college. “We don’t start early enough having those conversations with young people. I think they ought to start in early middle school,” said DeVos.
