The YA novel Thirteen Reasons Why was adapted for Netflix and it’s getting mixed reviews from mental health experts. The story follows Hannah Baker, a high school student who commits suicide and leaves cassette tapes for the people she holds responsible for her death. Many experts say the show doesn’t do a good enough job of educating teens about suicide or suicide prevention. Some worry it could inspire copycat acts among vulnerable teens, while others think it wrongly places responsibility on the survivors of suicide loss. Several schools in North America have issued warnings about the show, and an elementary school in Canada has even banned students from talking about the show on school grounds.
