East Brunswick Elections: Susanna Chiu for the Board of Education | #Education

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Susanna Chiu is a candidate for the East Brunswick Board of Education.  BOE candidates are not linked to any particular political party.

My name is Susanna Chiu and I have been living in East Brunswick for over 20 years with my husband Joe.  We have two children, ages 27 and 23 who have attended EBPS from K-12, who have had the benefit of receiving an outstanding education.  I am currently serving my second term on the Board of Education, and I have chosen to run for re-election because I believe I bring experience and a unique perspective that complements the other BOE members so that we can work together for the benefit of our students, our staff and our community during this critical time. 

As director of energy services at PSE&G, I lead a team that delivers energy efficiency programs to help customers save money and energy while reducing carbon emissions.  Through my career, I’ve learned that the best way to achieve outstanding results is by creating a team environment built on a foundation of trust, diversity and respect.  I bring these learnings and these values to my role as a BOE member.

Prior to the BOE, I have served on numerous non-profit boards – as President of Literacy Volunteers of NJ, Principal of Mid-Jersey Chinese School of East Brunswick and Vice-Chair of the Chinese American Cultural Association.  I’ve also served as the Vice-Chair of the East Brunswick Human Relations Council and as a member of the Redevelopment Committee.  I participated as a community member representative on the BOE’s technology committee and community programs committee.  These engagements have helped to expand my views and broaden my understanding of the needs of our diverse community.

When COVID 19 disrupted our way of life in March, our community had to adapt to new norms. For some, the transition was easier, and for others, the transition created many challenges. Every family has different needs and the only way to fight this pandemic is to pull together as a community and work as a team. We must listen.  We must acknowledge the challenges that our staff and families are facing. We must have open and respectful dialogue. If we work together as a community, and remain flexible, we can maintain the proper balance to provide an approach that looks out for the interests of the overall well-being of our community.

Certainly the first priority is the health, safety and well-being of the staff, students and community. The focus on safety is evidenced in the security systems and protocols that we now have in place at all schools.  Additionally, over the past several years, the BOE has prioritized significant strides in technology that provided a solid foundation for remote learning that includes one-to-one devices for students, software platforms to enable on-line classrooms, and a hardware infrastructure that can support the volume of activity we now need to be successful in a hybrid or remote environment. We must have plans that are flexible so that we can adapt to the situation as it evolves, and to adapt as the science evolves. I plan to continue to support and advocate for maintaining focus on the health and safety of our students, our staff and our community with solutions that balance diverse needs.

Outside the core curricular programs, our school district offers a robust set of clubs and activities that provide students with additional experiences for growth and development.  It is as important as ever to continue to support students with opportunities to explore their interests. 

No one has all the answers – but working together – we will find the best solutions that we possibly can, by listening, learning and adapting.  I’d be honored to have the opportunity to serve the community and work together to maintain our place as a leading school district
