Eva Mendes quote about spanking sparks debate over parenting | #parenting

Depending on when and how you were raised, you might think that spanking is either a normal part of child rearing or tantamount to child abuse. For actress Eva Mendes, who shared her favorite parenting quote on Instagram, it’s the latter.

“Spanking does for a child’s development what hitting a spouse does for a marriage,” read the quote, attributed to Racheous.com, a popular parenting blogger and self-described children’s rights advocate.

The comment sparked strong reactions on both sides, but Mendes’ view is increasingly common among parents and experts. More and more, researchers agree that spanking and other forms of physical discipline can lead to increased aggression, antisocial behavior, mental health difficulties and even spousal assault in later life — all in addition to the physical harm it does. In the last decade, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed its policy to strongly advise against spanking, other forms of corporal punishment or verbal shaming.

About one in three parents in 2017 said they spanked their kids, compared to about half in 1993, reported a study last year, showing that the practice is on the decline — but not quite out yet. Some Americans who either spanked their children or were spanked as children argue anecdotally in favor of spanking and the debate can spark controversy in some circles.

“Love you but completely disagree. The goal in raising kids is not to have to spank, but it’s correcting before they can reason behavior out with you. Completely different than hitting someone. That’s not correcting behavior. We raised 5 respectful loving kind kids that were a joy to be around. Good fruit shows from loving correction,” commented one user, “garbagemanswife.”

Mendes responded, “I totally respect you. Thank you for a respectful comment. So nice to disagree with respect. I found the quote powerful and wanted to pass it on. Lotsa love to and yours [heart emoji].”
