Fairview Park babysitter charged with molesting children talked off bridge before court appearance

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Lakewood man accused of raping a boy he babysat faces additional charges after investigators say they identified a second victim who is 3 years old.

A Cuyahoga County grand jury on Thursday charged Thomas Gilman, 21, with three counts of rape, four counts each of kidnapping and disseminating matters harmful to juveniles, and one count of attempted rape.

Gilman faces life in prison if he is convicted of all counts.

Gilman, who is set for a Wednesday arraignment in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, was arrested in June after a 13-year-old boy walked in on him molesting the boy’s 8-year-old brother, according to court records.

Fairview Park police say Gilman started sexually abusing the boy in September 2014, when the boy was 6 years old.

Thursday’s indictment accuses Gilman of sexually abusing a 3-year-old boy beginning in April through the date of his arrest.

Gilman is the son of Lakewood’s fire chief, Scott Gilman. His family and the victims’ family are close, police said.

Gilman will plead not guilty to the charges, his attorney, Kevin Spellacy, said.
