‘Fishing with Buddies’ fishing event took place this weekend at the Gulfport Harbor | #specialneeds | #kids

Those dealing with special needs were able to get out and enjoy some waves on Saturday thanks to Mississippi Gulf Coast Buddy Sports and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

The Gulf Coast Buddy Sports organization held a Fishing with Buddies event. Gulf Coast Buddy Sports is a non-profit organization that provides recreational sports and leisure opportunities for those with special needs.

Twelve boats took 24 kids and adults with special needs out on the water to enjoy a day of fishing.

Each boat had two participants, a family, or a volunteer on board.

Gulf Coast Buddy Sports Executive Director Mike Crawford tells News 25 this gives those with special needs an opportunity to get out and experience something new. “A lot of times, parents and families just need a break. They need opportunities and a lot of times it’s hard for families when you have somebody with special needs in your family to actually commit to doing an activity and you know we want to do it free of charge.”

The organization has other Buddy events that volunteers can be a part of such as the Buddy Ball Baseball, Kicking it with Buddies Kickball, and Cheer Buddies.
