The former vice principal and athletic director at Blair High School was federally indicted on child pornography charges on Friday.

Daniel Hutsell, 41, is charged with three counts of possession of child pornography and three counts of distribution of child pornography in federal court.

On multiple occasions in 2021, the 41-year-old is alleged to have possessed and distributed “visual depiction” of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Hutsell was released by the court, but is not allowed to have contact with anyone under the age of 18, except supervised visits with his own children. He is no longer employed by Blair Community Schools.

According to court documents, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip of 19 uploaded files to Stelivo, a company that runs real-time chat websites.

The Nebraska State Patrol, which began investigating Hutsell in November 2021, linked the user name that uploaded the files to his IP address, according to court documents.

Investigators described two of the uploads — one involved a girl between the ages of 8 and 10 and the other involved a boy between ages 10 and 12 with an older girl, according to court documents. In both images, the children were pictured in lewd poses, and partially or completely naked.

On Nov. 30, state and federal authorities executed a search warrant on Hutsell’s home, according to court documents.

According to investigators, Hutsell admitted to using freechatnow.com to trade pornography, but he denied any involvement with child sexual abuse material.

However, when asked if he remembered seeing the image of the girl, Hutsll recalled seeing it but he advised that he “thought the girl appeared to be of age.”

When an investigator asked if he thought his wife, who is a physician’s assistant, would think the photo is of a child under the age of 18, Hutsell stated that “his wife would think the child is too young.”

According to the search warrant, Hutsell told investigators there were “somewhere around 100 to 800” pornographic images on his laptop that he used to trade for other images on freechatnow.com.

According to court documents, state patrol investigators later obtained a second search warrant to examine Hutsell’s laptop, phones and other devices, as well as cloud and social media accounts linked to his Gmail address.

About six hours after investigators left his home in November 2021, Hutsell was found seated in his car in the garage with the vehicle’s engine running and he was hospitalized for several days, according to court documents.
