Greenwich school board OKs $122M capital budget | #Education

GREENWICH — The Board of Education unanimously approved its largest capital budget request ever — well above what the Board of Estimate and Taxation hopes to spend town-wide.

The $121,714,311 proposal includes capital projects that have been requested for years and deferred by the BET and Representative Town Meeting, such as the renovation of Old Greenwich School.

Still, the board did reduce its fiscal year 2024 request by $9 million since its initial draft, a result of strategic cuts despite a $15 million increase in Central Middle School’s building estimate.

Karen Kowalski, vice-chair of the board, pushed against the nine-figure proposal but eventually voted in support. She pointed out the guidelines from the BET’s budget committee set a $100 million budget for capital improvements across all departments.
