High-school basketball roundup: Bapst’s shot in final seconds lifts Grove City

Grove City 42, Dublin Coffman 40: Nick Bapst hit a leaner in the lane with 4.5 seconds remaining and Grove City upset third-seeded Dublin Coffman in a Division I district semifinal boys basketball game at Marysville last night.

A driving shot by Coffman’s CJ Saunders in the final second was blocked out of bounds by Robbie Jobe. With 0.5 of a second placed back on the clock, Coffman’s ensuing inbounds pass was batted away by Kyle Laffin to end it.

Bapst scored 23 points to lead the 15th-seeded Greyhounds (17-8), who led for most of the way. Saunders had 18 for Coffman (22-2).

Newark 43, Zanesville 37: Dustin Stoneburner made two free throws with 16.6 seconds remaining and fifth-seeded Newark (20-5) closed with a 7-0 run to put away 11th-seeded Zanesville (19-6) in a Division I district semifinal at Pickerington North. Jordan Dartis had 16 points and Stoneburner 12 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats.

Westerville South 79, Canal Winchester 51: Andre Wesson scored 14 of his 21 points in the first half and top-seeded Westerville South (23-1) coasted to a Division I district semifinal victory over Canal Winchester (16-8) at Olentangy Orange. D.J. Dingess added 15 points for the Wildcats, who jumped to a 23-7 lead.

Gahanna 57, Chillicothe 44: Second-seeded Gahanna (21-3) used its height advantage and 9-of-10 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to pull away from Chillicothe (14-10) in a Division I district semifinal at Bloom-Carroll. Matt Moyer had 16 points and Nick Ward 12 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Lions, who led only 41-39 entering the final quarter. Tommy Bolte had 21 points for the Cavaliers.

Walnut Ridge 58, Centennial 47: Malik Harrison had 14 of his 19 points in the first half and added 13 rebounds, lifting top-seeded Walnut Ridge (18-5) to a Division II district semifinal victory over Centennial (14-11) at East. Anthony Slappy had 18 points for Centennial.

Johnstown 58, Beechcroft 47: Jason Carter’s 21 points and 13 rebounds powered fourth-seeded Johnstown (21-3) to a victory over seventh-seeded Beechcroft (14-8) in a Division II district semifinal at Gahanna.

Hartley 62, Mount Gilead 36: Sixth-seeded Hartley (13-10) closed the first half with a 17-0 run and rolled to a Division III district semifinal rout of fourth-seeded Mount Gilead (20-4) at Highland. Including a 5-0 start to the third quarter, the Hawks held the Indians scoreless for a stretch of 9:30. Jake Fischer went 6 of 8 from three-point range and scored a season-high 23 points for Hartley, which outrebounded Mount Gilead 37-18.

Africentric 69, Wellington 42: Houston Smith had 23 points and top-seeded Africentric (18-6) led from the start finish in a Division IV district semifinal victory over Wellington (13-11) at Westerville Central.

Harvest Prep 94, Danville 29: David Dennis Jr. led five players in double figures with 20 points and added 10 rebounds, helping second-seeded Harvest Prep (21-4) rout Danville (7-16) in a Division IV district semifinal at Watkins Memorial. Jordan Clark added 17 points for the Warriors.


North Union 53, Oak Harbor 42: Emily Clark scored 18 points as North Union (26-1) finished strong to defeat Oak Harbor (17-9) in a Division III regional game at Lexington. Pax Stofcheck added 11 points for the Wildcats, who outscored the Rockets 16-8 in the final quarter.

Cincinnati Summit Country Day 41, Liberty Union 38: Despite 21 points and 14 rebounds from Gabby Burris, Liberty Union (22-5) dropped a Division III regional semifinal game to Summit Country Day (26-1) at Springfield. A three-point try by the Lions’ Blake Collins rimmed out as time expired.
