Iowa basketball: Ranking potential breakout players | #schoolshooting

Iowa basketball will kick off the 2021-22 season on Friday night in an exhibition contest against D2 Slippery Rock. That game will tip-off at 7:01 PM CT on Big Ten Network Plus.

The Hawkeyes will have a different look this year. Iowa loses three of its top four scorers from last year’s team in Luka Garza, Joe Wieskamp, and CJ Fredrick. Jordan Bohannon is the leading returning scorer for Iowa and is expected to play a key role this year in the backcourt.

There are a lot of question marks surrounding this Iowa basketball team. Iowa has been an offensive-oriented team with Fran McCaffery on the sidelines, but there is talk that this could be one of McCaffery’s most athletic and best defensive teams.

Who could be poised for a breakout year?

To keep things simple, we’ll define a breakout candidate as a player whose role is could change significantly for the better. For the most part, this refers to reserves in line for more time and a bigger part of the offense. We did not put Joe Toussaint in here as he’s considered a junior. We used returning underclassmen, those that are considered sophomores.

We won’t include the newcomers, so that involves Filip Rebraca, Payton Sandfort, and Riley Mulvey. We will talk about five candidates and a special mention that has received a lot of buzz this offseason, and it’s clear that he’s set for a bigger role this year.
