Dr. Rana Al-Hajjah, Director of Programs Department at the Regional Office of the World Health Organization, said that with the onset of the Corona pandemic, many countries have taken a decision to close the year, but we generally do not currently believe that the general closure will be effective except in a specific case.
She added: “Overall, we recommend that there be a continuous risk assessment according to the variables in the epidemiological data, on the basis of which the decision to close in some areas is made according to the increase in the number of cases, and it is advisable that countries follow this system.”
This came in the press conference held by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, today, Thursday; On the developments of the new Corona pandemic “Covid-19” in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
And she continued: “The World Health Organization does not generally recommend a decision to close schools amid the rise in Corona injuries worldwide. Rather, the decision is made at the level of each country and after conducting an assessment of the risks within it.”
She explained that the disease is weak for children of school age and is not dangerous for them, and that it is not one of the factors that significantly affect the spread of the virus.
Al-Hujjah said: “In general, we do not recommend closing schools, but some countries have decided to close due to the increase in the population, and there are other countries that have decided to confuse school attendance and study on line so that there is not a large gathering of children.”
She noted that countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region have taken steps to help students return to school after a long period of closure, and that the continuity of education is crucial for children’s learning, development, health, well-being and safety.
Al-Hujjah stressed the need to adhere to the recommendations of social distancing and preventive measures, which include wearing masks and disinfecting hands, explaining that those who become ill with seasonal influenza can be infected with the Corona virus at the same time.
She pointed to the importance of seasonal influenza vaccination to reduce risk rates, adding: “We encourage people to take the vaccine this year, and if we got it last year, it would not be useful not to have it this year, because influenza, like other viruses, is constantly changing, and the seasonal vaccine is especially effective for groups. The most vulnerable and most dangerous people to the disease are health workers. “
The World Health Organization feared that the number of new cases of the new Corona virus would increase significantly during the coming weeks in Egypt, as a result of laxity in applying precautionary measures and entering the winter season.
The director of the information management program in the emergency program at the World Health Organization’s regional office, Dr. Pierre Nepeth, reviewed the developments of Corona in Egypt, saying: “Since the beginning of last August, the number of cases has stabilized above 100 cases per day on average, and as of mid-August the number of deaths has been stable.”
He added, “It seems that the hospitals have the capacity to deal with cases and critical cases.”
However, “Nepeth” indicated that the number of Corona tests has decreased in Egypt recently, adding: “We have a high percentage of discovered cases that are reserved in hospitals, and therefore low cases are not reported.”
He said, “The discovered cases mean that the virus is still present, and the situation is under control according to the number of reported cases, despite the lack of strict physical distancing procedures and the non-commitment of citizens to wear masks.”
He continued: “Citizens’ lack of respect for these measures may be due to the feeling of the end of the pandemic and the lack of feeling of situations around them, but this situation is worrisome, because we are entering the winter season and we see forms of interaction, which may lead to a significant increase in the number of cases.”
He continued: “It is more likely that an increase in the number of new cases of the new Coronavirus” Covid-19 “will be observed in Egypt in the coming weeks.
This came in response to Masrawi’s question at the press conference held by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, next Thursday; On the developments of the new Corona pandemic “Covid-19” in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
“If we look at epidemics all over the world, we will notice that we see a second wave and the reappearance of cases in countries affected by the first wave in April, such as France, Germany and Italy,” he added.
He continued: “There is an increase in the number of cases, but the situation in the region differs from Europe, with the exception of Bahrain, Oman and Iran, and we have noticed that the epidemic was delayed in countries that have implemented strict measures such as Morocco and Jordan.”
The director of the information management program in the emergency program stated that Egypt was the second affected country in the region by Corona, and the number of cases increased to reach a peak in late June, then cases decreased in early August to less than 200 cases per day.
“The trend in the region is to re-increase the number of cases due to the return of travel, and the closure measures have been increased, the increase in social interaction, and due to the low number, people believe that the pandemic has ended and as a result, they do not take precautionary measures,” Nepeth said.
He pointed out that the climate component also has a role in increasing the number of HIV infections, adding: “There is a climatic element, as it is more likely, like respiratory diseases, to see an increase in the number of cases, and then it is more likely that we will notice an increase in cases in the coming weeks in Egypt.”
For his part, Dr. Abdel Nasser Abu Bakr, Director of the Preparedness for Infection Risk Unit at the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, said that Egypt has the ability to produce Corona vaccines, and the organization is working with it and helping it in that task.
Abu Bakr added that what concerns the organization is the provision of vaccines for low- and middle-income groups, and therefore we are working in Egypt and all countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region on this matter through the “Kovacs” facility, adding: “We have established a framework for fair and equitable access to effective and safe vaccines, and Egypt already has the capacity. We need to strengthen this capacity, and the Egyptian government has set this one of its priorities and we are cooperating with the Ministry of Health and other ministries, because if the vaccine production capabilities are available, we will help in this, because it will be an achievement. “
He explained that there are 42 vaccines that have reached the stage of clinical trials, 10 of which are in the final stage of trials to ensure safety and effectiveness, and we expect that the vaccines will be available at the end of this year.
