LYONS, Kan. (KAKE) — Sterling Police Chief Derrick Ploutz said Sgt. Cory Ryan is stable, alert, and talking as he recovers in a Wichita hospital following a shooting in Rice County Friday.
“He was sitting up and able to carry on a conversation with me yesterday (Sunday). His prognosis is looking much better. He is responding to treatment,” said Ploutz, “He woke up asking when he could go back to work. That’s what we want to hear is that fighting spirit.”
Lyons high school teacher and coach Brian Friess has been released from the hospital. Lyons residents told KAKE News they’re heartbroken by the situation, but cheering both men on as they recover.
“They’ve always been a positive impact for everyone,” said Lyons Middle School Special Education Teacher Angie Linden, “We’re a small community but we all like to pitch in whenever something bad impacts us. We step up and help each other out.”
The KBI is still investigating this case.
