Kokomo police credit tips from community in arresting man accused of molesting child at Goodwill

KOKOMO, Ind. – Kokomo police arrested a suspect following a reported sexual assault on a 3-year-old boy at a Goodwill store.

According to the Kokomo Police Department, officers were called to Goodwill at 2222 W. Sycamore St. around 5:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Officers said a white male with dark hair and a beard approached a child who left his mother for a brief moment and assaulted him inside the store.

“It appears that he followed the kid around in the store,” Major Brian Seldon said.

Investigators said the child’s mother confronted the suspect after noticing something unusual.

“What she noticed was that her child’s pants were down to his ankles so I mean that grabbed her attention,” Seldon said. “The child mentioned something the suspect had taken his pants down.”

Officers said the man left the store before they arrived.

Surveillance video from Goodwill shows the suspect interacting with another man before leaving the store. Police said the other man was not involved in the case.

Shortly after police posted surveillance pictures, they started getting calls from the public, leading to an arrest.

Breighton T. Wells, 28, was arrested on a child molestation charge Tuesday afternoon. Police said he is not known to the victim’s family.

“Safety of our customers and employee are great priority of Goodwill’s,” said Cindy Graham, a spokesperson for Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana.

Graham said store employees acted appropriately contacting police, that the store is cooperating with officers and will take a look at security camera placement. She said Goodwill is safe place.

“It’s just really tragic as far as I’m concerned personally,” Graham said. “We couldn’t have anticipated this. I don’t think anybody would have and so we’re gonna see if there’s anything else that we should be doing or could be doing.”

At last check, Wells did not have a bond set.
