Letter to the Editor from Board of Education Candidate Christa Sorensen | #Education

Dear Sparta Residents,

I am writing this letter to the editor as a parent and as a taxpayer of Sparta Township.  I moved here in 2006 for the school district, for the community that Sparta offers and because it is a beautiful place to raise a family.  About three years ago I began attending board meetings and have kept myself educated on the topics being discussed and voted on.  I have listened to a variety of comments and concerns from residents and teachers ranging from busing, budget, security, staffing, communication, facilities, teacher contracts and much more.  I have listened to student representatives updating the board on all of the exciting things happening at the high school.  I have witnessed teachers and students presenting on subjects they are passionate about.  The one thing that is clear to me, is that we have some of the most amazing and dedicated teachers and an awesome student body. When I began thinking about my board of education platform and why I wanted to run for this volunteer position, trust, collaboration and community are the words that came to mind.  I want to serve as a voice for our community.  This role requires trust.  Sparta’s residents can trust that my decisions will always be made in the best interest of students, staff, residents and taxpayers. It also requires effective collaboration between groups and communication to all stakeholders.  I will encourage clear communication with and participation from residents and collaborate with other local entities to work towards the common goal of making Sparta a district of distinction.  Effective and genuine collaboration and communication is what makes a strong community.  I am committed to the Spartan community and I will do all I can in my role to safeguard that the school district is run effectively.  I want to share in the success of our district and address the areas where we can improve.  I will encourage more communication with and participation from residents and collaborate with other local entities to work towards the common goal of making the Sparta school district the best it can be.

There are many topics that are important to me including the state of our elementary school facilities, the school budget, student safety, busing, the superintendent search, student achievement, career path readiness, etc.  I do not have one single focus; my focus is our district as a whole.  I will partner with other board members to work together with administration, to hire the right candidates to run our district and to hold our administration accountable for the district goals that are set.

I chose to run as a single party candidate, and not on a joint ticket, because I believe the value of a strong board of education is diversity amongst its members.  I am an independent thinker; I am open-minded; I am always willing to listen and learn.  Being able to look at an issue from all sides and ask questions from different perspectives is important.  I will not “rubber stamp” policies and I will always take the time to ask questions and understand the resolutions that are being voted on. I want to be a voice for our community and ensure that we make sound decisions with our available resources.

I would be proud to serve the Sparta Township community: students, parents and teachers as well as residents without children in the school system.

On November 3rd, VOTE #1 for TRUST, COLLABORATION, COMMUNITY!

Sincerely,

Christa Sorensen
