PAINTSVILLE, Ky. — A man accused of kidnapping his son from Martin County and taking him to Columbus, Ohio, has been returned to Kentucky.

Johnny Kirk, 25, was booked in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville Monday afternoon.
He is charged with kidnapping with serious physical injury and second-degree assault.

Kirk is accused of taking his 1-year-old son, also named Johnny Kirk, on Nov. 6. The Mountain Citizen newspaper reported that the child’s mother and grandmother were slashed with a box cutter during the abduction.

Kirk was later arrested in Columbus and has been held in Ohio until his extradition back to Kentucky.

The kidnapping charge could carry a sentence of between 20 years and life in prison. However, the case could also get bumped up to federal court since the child was taken to another state.
