Martin Freeman reveals the difficulties of co-parenting his two children with ex Amanda Abbington  | #parenting

Martin Freeman has spoken about the realities of co-parenting with former partner Amanda Abbington, with whom he split after 16 years together in 2016.

The Sherlock star, 50, who shares son Joe, 16, and 14-year-old daughter Grace with the actress, said it ‘hurt’ when the children did things with their mother that did not involve him.

Speaking to the Radio Times ahead of the new series of his comedy Breeders the actor revealed that being a parent taught him he was ‘quick to anger’.

‘It hurts when they do things without you’: Martin Freeman has  revealed the difficulties of co-parenting his two children with ex Amanda Abbington

He told the publication when asked about how he feels about his kids flying the nest: ‘Me and their mum [Amanda] don’t live together so there are times where they’re inevitably going to not be with you, or when they say, “Maybe not this weekend”‘.

Adding: ‘It’s hard not to feel hurt when they start doing things that don’t involve you, even though you understand it and welcome it because it’s totally natural’.

Martin also revealed what being a parent has taught him, musing: ‘I found I was amazingly quick to anger. I always knew it, but it was like a rocket – nothing to call social services about, but I knew I could and should be better. That surprised me and taught me to try to not be that.’

Speaking about the opening scene of the comedy’s third season he said it was based on a personal experience, explaining: ‘I had a dream where I was going upstairs to shout at my children and talking myself down with each step I took, but then opened the bedroom door and went mad at them anyway’.

The dark comedy, which the actor also co-created, follows Paul (Martin) and Ally (Daisy Haggard) as they struggle with parenthood as is reportedly based on the Lord Of The Ring’s actor’s own experiences.

When asked what he wish he’d been told about having kids Martin said: ‘One of my least favourite things is people going, “Oh, you just wait! Oh, you’re in trouble now…”

‘This constant doom, as if they hadn’t enjoyed any part of their parenting. Let us enjoy it!’.

Amanda previously revealed that she kept her high-profile break up a secret for six months after she and Martin just couldn’t live with each other anymore.

Talking to the The Sunday Times magazine she said: ‘When we broke up nobody knew, we didn’t tell anybody except for a few key people because they had to know, because of the logistics of hotels and stuff.

‘It took six months for it to get out and a lot of that was while we were working on Sherlock… We were professional and we were going to get on and make a show and be civil to each other.

‘We still get on really well, we still really both admire each other as actors… he’s a great guy, but we just couldn’t live with each other any more.’

The pair met on the set of the film Men Only in 2000 and went on to play formidable duo John and Mary Watson in the acclaimed BBC drama Sherlock.

Amanda is now in a relationship with former daredevil Jonathan Goodwin, 42, the couple were friends for years before they began dating.

However they were only together two months before Jonathan became permanently paralysed when he was crushed during a stunt – leaving him in a wheelchair.

Meanwhile Martin is dating French actress Rachel Mariam, 29, who has featured in many roles including BBC’s smash hit Normal People.
